Rebozo hip carry
A rebozo hip carry sits the baby on one hip, weight in the cotton, one shoulder working. Most families want 98 inches or 118 inches of 100% cotton. Rings are optional. Safety is still T.I.C.K.S.: tight, in view, close enough to kiss, chin off the chest, back supported. Learn the hold from a person, not from this page.
Mexican women have carried this way for a long time. That does not make every scarf a carrier, and it does not make a hip sit a newborn default. The cloth has to be cotton, woven so it holds weight, and long enough to finish a knot. Then the baby has to have enough tone that the face stays in view without you holding the head.

Length, rings, and when not
78 inches is usually too short to carry. 98 inches is the workhorse hip carry for many bodies, and the same length a doula wants for labor. 118 inches gives more wrap. 196 inches is a different job: a full wrap, not this hold. The named comparison lives on rebozo babywearing.

Is a hip carry the same as a Mexican baby wrap?

Can I hip-carry in the same 98-inch I bought for labor?

Do rings make a hip carry safer?
No. Safety is the carry, not the hardware. Rings are an adjustable finish. Acrylic with rings is still acrylic. Cotton, tight, in view. Then walk.
