Acrylic rebozo
An acrylic rebozo is usually a synthetic shawl in a long rectangle — sold as a “doula shawl,” “Mexican wrap,” or “baby rebozo,” and sold for far less than cotton. Fiber is the first fork. Lola ships cotton from a telar de pedal (foot-pedal loom), about $32–$77 across four lengths. Acrylic is a petroleum-based fiber: it can pill, trap heat, and stretch under load in a way I will not trust for a birth bag or a hip carry. How to tell in a listing
- Read the fiber. If it does not say cotton (or wool, or silk), walk on.
- Look at the fringe — glued tassels are a scarf signal.
- A very low price with the word “rebozo” is usually this look-alike, not Lola’s cotton band.
- For carrying: also fail an open weave (finger through). See when NOT to carry.
Acrylic has uses. It is not this garment. No invented weavers or towns. This glossary is teaching, not a stock list.
Questions
Is every cheap rebozo acrylic?
No. Price alone is not the test — fiber is. A working cotton cloth can sit about $32–$77. A cheap listing that says acrylic (or says nothing) is the look-alike. See how to choose.
Can I use acrylic for labor if that is what I have?
