What is an ayate?
An ayate is a rough cloth of maguey (agave) fiber — often called ixtle — historically used in Mexico to carry cargo and loads. It is a precursor and related textile to the Mexican rebozo. It is not a rebozo. The rebozo is a colonial-fusion rectangular shawl; first written mention 1572.

An ayate (from Nahuatl ayatl) is a rustic, often open-weave cloth of maguey or related plant fiber. In the historical record Wikipedia cites for the rebozo, the ayate appears as a rough maguey carrying cloth — one of the Indigenous wraps that share physical habits with the later shawl. Fiber and use
Spanish dictionaries of Mexican Spanish define ayate as a sparse cloth of maguey fiber (and, in later use, other plant fibers or cotton). In living craft, ayate still names maguey/ixtle textiles — carrying cloths, bags, and, in modern commerce, small washcloths. That modern washcloth aisle is not this page’s job. The school needs the historical garment class: a rough carrying cloth, not a dress shawl.
Pre-Hispanic people wove plant-fiber cloth and carried children and loads. That is true. It does not make every rectangular cloth a rebozo. The rebozo, as named and described in the written record Wikipedia follows, is early colonial fusion: Indigenous wraps (ayate, tilma, mamatl), Spanish mantilla influence, later Asian influence on the fringe.
