Hip squeeze

A hip squeeze with a rebozo uses the cloth as extra hands. The rectangle wraps the hips so a helper can give steady counter-pressure during a contraction — the same idea as a double hip squeeze, without the palms giving out. Comfort and a bit of space. Not a guarantee that a baby will turn. Learn it from a trained person, not from this page.

Many laboring people ask for pressure on the sacrum and the sides of the pelvis. Two hands can do that until the helper is tired. A cotton rebozo lets one person keep the pressure even. I sell the cloth. I do not certify the hands.

What it is What it is not
Counter-pressure with a rectangle of cotton as extra hands A medical protocol. A substitute for a midwife or a doula who knows the room.
The same idea as a double hip squeeze A different trick that “fixes OP.” Room and comfort are the honest offer.
Work you learn from a trained person A reel. A weekend certificate printed on a scarf. A reason to buy 196 inches.
One named labor use of the rebozo, next to manteada A turn guarantee. Evidence that any of this changes birth outcomes is limited.

How it sits next to other names

English-speaking birth rooms already know a double hip squeeze: two hands, hips, a contraction. The rebozo is that pressure with cloth. Manteada is a different motion — a gentle sift, not a squeeze. Do not mash the names together and call it one scarf trick.

Named techniques, contraindications (bleeding, anterior placenta, no vigor, consent), and the papers — Cohen 2015, Iversen 2017, Spinning Babies — live on rebozo for labor. The stop list also lives on rebozo safety. If the person says no, or it hurts, you stop. Consent is the first technique.

Credit, without a costume

Mexican parteras have used this cloth as extra hands in labor for a long time. English rooms borrowed the squeeze. That borrowing is not the lineage. I will not invent a grandmother or a town to make the word feel more Mexican. Pay a teacher. Take their class. Do not extract a wrap from a video and call it yours.

In order

  1. Learn the motion from a trained person — a partera, or a birth worker they have taught.
  2. Read the stop list on safety before you wrap a laboring hip.
  3. If you buy cloth, buy 98 inches of 100% cotton. Skip acrylic. Buying it does not teach the hands.

This glossary is not a class and not a product page. The shop shows what is for sale. We do not claim stock here.

Questions

Is a hip squeeze the same as manteada?

No. A hip squeeze is counter-pressure. Manteada is a gentle sift. Different jobs, same cloth. Both belong on rebozo for labor.

Will this turn my baby?

Do not count on it. Comfort and space are the honest claims. Limited evidence. Medical care for malposition is a conversation with your provider, not with a shawl.

Do I buy a special length for a hip squeeze?

No special SKU. Most bags want 98 inches of 100% cotton — about $42. Skip acrylic. See how to choose.
