Labor term
Acomodada
Acomodada is a Spanish midwifery word for settling or arranging a baby — often by wrapping a laboring person with a rebozo. Same family as manteada. Not a shake, not a class, not a product. Skip it with bleeding. Learn it from a trained person.
The verb is acomodar: to settle, to arrange, to make room. In a birth room the noun acomodada is the work of helping a baby find a better lie — not flipping a pancake, not a guarantee, and not a SKU. Mexican parteras as a class have used the rebozo this way for a long time. English pages sometimes print acomodada and manteada as if they were one motion. Some teachers keep them apart: the sift is manteada; the settling is acomodada. I will not pretend this glossary settles that argument. Different rooms, different grouping. Same rule: gentle, and learn it from a person.
This is a glossary entry, not a product page. Named techniques, the papers, and the 98-inch default live on rebozo for labor. The stop list — bleeding, anterior placenta, no vigor, learn from a person — lives on rebozo safety. Evidence that any of this changes birth outcomes is limited. Comfort and space are the honest claims.
| What it is | What it is not |
|---|---|
| Settling / arranging | A proven version of an external cephalic version. A promise that OP will turn. |
| Often wrapping with a rebozo so there is more room | A vigorous shake. Fast bouncing. Copying a reel at the bedside. |
| Same family as manteada | Always the same nickname. Teachers group them differently. Both are gentle. |
| A midwifery word | A colorway, a kit name, or a reason to buy 196 inches. |
How it relates to rebozo work
A rebozo is extra hands: wrap, lift, sift, hold. Acomodada is one of the names you will hear for the settling part of that work. On our labor guide it sits with sifting, belly lift, and wrapping for pushing — a list, not a protocol. If a class promises that one scarf trick will “fix OP,” walk out. Room, comfort, and a trained pair of hands are the honest offer.
Most doulas do this work — when they have been taught — with 98 inches of 100% cotton. That is the birth-bag length. Rings stay in the drawer. The packing list for birth workers is rebozo for doulas.
When not
- Bleeding. Do not jolt, shake, or load the belly if there is vaginal bleeding, bleeding from the placenta, or any suspicion of abruption.
- Anterior placenta. Be extra gentle, or skip abdominal work. Do not sift hard against a placenta on the front wall.
- The person says no — or it hurts. Consent first. Round-ligament spasm is a stop.
- Vigor. Fast shaking is not acomodada and it is not manteada. There is a baby in there.
- You have not learned it. Find a teacher. This page will not grow hands.
The combined checklist is rebozo safety. The sift, named carefully, is manteada.
Credit, without a village I invented
I am not going to invent a grandmother or a named weaver to make this word feel more Mexican. The knowledge belongs to Mexican parteras as a class. English-speaking birth work borrowed some of the names. That borrowing is not the lineage. Pay the teachers. Take their classes.
In order
- Read the stop list.
- Learn the motion from a trained person — a partera, or a birth worker they have taught.
- Use cotton, 98 inches for most bodies. Skip acrylic.
- Keep it gentle. If you cannot tell settle from shake, stop.

Questions
Is acomodada the same as manteada?
Related family, different emphasis. Manteada names the gentle sift. Acomodada names the settling or arranging. Some English pages treat them as one motion. Some teachers do not. Neither is a vigorous shake. Neither is a product.
Will acomodada turn an OP baby?
Do not count on it. Some families describe more comfort and, sometimes, more room. That is not a promise. Medical care for malposition is a conversation with your provider. Evidence is limited.
Do I buy a different length for this?
No. Ninety-eight inches of cotton covers this and most other labor work. See rebozo sizes if you are choosing one cloth for the bag.
